Novell restructure sees 900 jobs go

NEWS Novell has axed 900 jobs, 16 per cent of its workforce, as part of a company-wide restructuring scheme that will see the networking giant focus on a customer-facing workforce. Steve Brown, UK managing director at Novell, said the shake-up would see workers with skills, such as engineering, which are no longer needed replaced by more sales marketing initiatives. Speaking exclusively to silicon.com, he said: "Growth expectations for the second and third quarters of this year were not met, so we are staying loyal to our long-term goal to provide customers with solutions, not out of the box products. This means we will be disposing of the skill sets that no longer fill Novell's requirements." Brown added that Novell would be working closely with its European partners, to provide the surviving workforce with more training, while also recruiting the new skills needed. Novell expects to post a pre-tax restructuring charge of up to $50m in its fourth fiscal quarter, ending 31 October 2000, but expects to recoup that at a rate of $25m per quarter with the new company structure.
