The company reported a modest rise of three per cent in the number of active subscribers, to 2.5 million. Revenues from its portal services were up 50 per cent. World Online, which announced its intention to merge with Italian ISP Tiscali on 7 September, claims its recent focus of cost-cutting is beginning to bear fruit. During the third quarter, World Online initiated "an ongoing efficiency programme", involving job cuts and corporate restructuring. It also closed down its unmetered access offerings.
