NEWS According to CEO, Robert Aimes, poorly managed storage is a major problem when trying to cope with the constant data flow involved in ecommerce. He said: "Poor storage can cause delay when taking email orders - the server quickly fills up and subsequently slows down all the online operations. As most SMEs are now doing business online, they should ensure fluid data flow to prevent loss of business." Rakesh Kumar, programme director at Meta Group, claims SMEs have traditionally perceived storage as a costly and demanding operation. "Small business don't see the point in investing in storage because it is seen as expensive and difficult to implement. But any company doing business online will have an exponential growth of data and should therefore have a system in place," he said. Claus Egge, analyst at IDC, agreed that storage service providers may be one answer to SMEs storage problems. He said: "Outsourcing storage makes sense because it has traditionally been costly and relatively complex technology to take care of in-house. The only thing IT directors may be wary of is the fact whether these SSPs take security seriously."
