NEWS IBM is touting the eServer z900 as the first mainframe built from the ground up for ebusiness. It allows thousands of virtual servers to be run from one physical box, allowing ASPs to accommodate more customers without taking up too much space. The system can dynamically allocate resources to meet different demands on the network. Many of the first customers intend to run Linux on the systems, according to the statement. However, a new 64-bit operating system designed specially for the z900, called z/OS, will start shipping at the end of March. At the same time, an improved version of the Shark Enterprise Storage Server is hitting the market. The enhancements include new disaster recovery solutions, including Peer to Peer Remote Copy and Native Fibre Channel Support for non-IBM systems, including Sun, Hewlett Packard and Novell.
