NEWS The zOS introduces a licence model that IBM claims will deliver substantially lower costs for the user. Instead of a unit price for the licence, buyers will be charged according to length of use. However, the changeover will be gradually introduced over a six-month period, rather being immediately implemented. Special features of the system include software with the capacity to assign particular tasks to the computing functions whilst in use. This process happens automatically thanks to the newly introduced Intelligent Resource Director. IBM is pitching its offering against cheaper, smaller servers from the likes of Sun Microsystems, Compaq and Dell, which have come to dominate the market for ebusiness platforms.
