NEWS The worldwide workstation market decreased considerably in the second quarter of 2001, with global shipments down 15 per cent on the same quarter of 2000. Research firm Gartner Dataquest said this was the third consecutive quarter to see a shipment decline for the workstation industry. Pia Rieppo, principal analyst covering workstations at Gartner Dataquest, said the decline in workstation sales has it roots in a market 'reality check' following recent years of unnaturally high growth. According to Gartner Dataquest, Dell was the only top tier vendor to experience double-digit growth in the second quarter and IBM was the only other top tier vendor to increase its market share in the quarter. Dell's market growth was up 14.1 per cent to 108,532 shipments, giving the company a 31.5 per cent market share. IBM was up 0.4 percent to 44,517 shipments, with a market share of 12.9 percent. Itanium-based workstations were introduced during Q2, but despite high expectations, shipment volumes were negligible with the exception of HP, the co-developer of Itanium's EPIC architecture. Rieppo said: "High-end workstation users that will most benefit from Itanium tend to be conservative and will likely wait for the platform and applications to mature. Therefore, we believe that Itanium-based workstations will likely remain a development platform until the next generation processor arrives next year."
