NEWS US chip giant Intel is threatening to take legal action to keep chipsets made by Taiwan-based Via Technologies off the market. Intel has said that it will take action against a number of Taiwan-based firms if Via chipsets made for the Pentium 4 CPU are found on PC motherboards. More than 80 per cent of the world's motherboards are produced in Taiwan and Intel is going to the source of the problem to stop the Via chipsets making it out into the marketplace. Via has not been granted a technology licence by Intel to develop Pentium 4 compatible chipsets but claims the US giant is being anti-competitive by refusing a licence, despite ongoing discussions between the two companies. The latest round of threats and accusations mirrors a similar dispute between the two companies last year when Intel sought legal action to prevent Via producing Pentium III compatible chipsets. The two companies settled out of court.
