NEWS The first 2GHz Pentium 4 processors are expected to ship in desktop PCs this week, with Compaq, Dell and Hewlett-Packard expected to take the lead. Prices will start in the US at $1,499. Dell is asking $1,800 for its 2GHz Dimension 8100PC or is offering a sturdier design including 128MB of RDRAM and a CD0RW drive for $2,208. Compaq's Presario 7000T system starts at $1,600. For a slightly better offer, $1,727 will get a 17-inch monitor, a CD-RW drive, a 40GB hard drive and 128MB of RAM. Intel is cutting prices on current Pentium 4 chips, so existing Pentium 4-based PCs should be available for as little as $900 by the end of 2001. The 2GHz chip is the same price as the current 1.8GHz chip, sold at $562.
