Sun gets hip with the Starcat

106 processors in one server, excessive? Surely not?...

By Julian Goldsmith, 25 September 2001 09:00

NEWS Sun Microsystems is expected to launch its most ambitious server product so far later today. The 106-processor Starcat server is widely seen as Sun's best attempt to rival IBM in the Unix market. The new product comes in four CPU configurations, ranging from 16 to 72 processors. However, the server can be configured with 106 processors for super computing tasks, at the expense of communications ability. All versions use Sun's latest 900MHz UltraSparc iii CPU with copper technology. Sun has stolen a march on IBM in this space, but Big Blue is due to launch its competing 32-processor Regatta server next week.
