NEWS Compaq has clinched a $1bn deal with the US postal service to become its sole provider of Windows-based hardware and services. Under the five-year contract Compaq will provide the postal agency with PCs, servers and support services, with an option to renew for another five years. Compaq has worked with the US post office before, under a similar seven-year deal during which it delivered $1.2m in hardware and services. The latest deal delivers a vote of confidence from an old customer at a time when many Compaq customers remain uncertain over the proposed merger with HP. The billion-dollar deal should also provide a boost to the company in a quarter where losses have spiralled because of poor PC sales and 11 September attacks. A spokesman for the company said that Compaq's services program had clinched the deal, beating what he termed as the 'usual suspects'.
