NEWS IBM and Fujitsu are in discussions which could lead to a merger or joint development of server products, according to newswires. Officials in the UK were unable to elaborate further on a story that appears to have resulted from a briefing to Nikkei investors in Japan. A statement from Fujitsu, quoted by the Japan Times, said: "Our two companies have begun talks on the possibility of co-operation in a wide range of areas, including hardware and software, as well as tie-ups in individual businesses." No further details were available and the company stressed talks were wide-ranging but at an early stage. It is believed the talks began in late September between Fujitsu president Naoyuki Akikusa and IBM chief operating officer Samuel Palmisano.
