IBM in court over disk drive woes

Click of death strikes Big Blue...

NEWS An angry customer has taken IBM to court over the shoddy performance of its Deskstar 75GXP Hard Disk Drive. Michael Granito Junior is filing the class action for the alleged defects on his own behalf and "all others similarly situated and the general public". Granito is backed up in his complaint by hundreds of other users who have posted comments on IBM user groups (including here at http://www.tech-report.com/onearticle.x/3035 ), many of which pan the disk drive. Most comments mention clicking noises made by the machine before it crashes or dies completely, a development of "bad sectors" within the hard drive and problems or an inability to write data to the hard drive. Those who purchased a 75GXP from 15 March 2000 to now are included in the hearing and may be liable for compensation if IBM loses the case. The class action states IBM represented the 75GXP as a safe and reliable disk drive for accessing and storing data on a personal computer. However, it points out: "Due to a uniform defect in the design and/or manufacturing process, when such a defect manifests the Deskstar 75GXP "crashes" without warning and results in the irretrievable loss of data and programs stored on the disk."
