NEWS AMD and Intel joined battle again this week as both companies announced price cuts of up to 30 per cent on their most popular desktop chips. Intel is expected to reduce prices on select Pentium 4 and Pentium III chipsets while AMD will trim the fat from its own recently released Athlon XP family. The cuts come just weeks before AMD's launch of its 1900+ Athlon - which is expected to outperform Intel's 2GHz Pentium 4. Intel is expected to fight back at the beginning of next year with the release of Northwood, its 2.2GHz Pentium 4 chip. Critics claim the reductions are more likely being made to accommodate the upcoming releases rather than to kick-start the struggling processor market. The price cuts are the latest in a battle which has raged throughout the year as AMD struggled to wrestle a four per cent market share from Intel. Earlier in the year Intel dropped the Pentium 4 to bargain basement prices in an effort to tempt users to upgrade from Pentium III in preparation for the release of Windows XP.
