NEWS Worldwide server sales for the third quarter fell seven per cent, with figures for Western Europe mirroring the overall decrease. Western European shipments were down seven per cent to 248 thousand units, while worldwide shipments dropped to 1,045,801, according to the latest figures from Gartner Dataquest. But despite the drop, Compaq came out trumps, holding onto its 23 per cent global market share and increasing its western European market share by one per cent to 33 per cent. In worldwide figures Dell ranked second with a 17 per cent share, while IBM came in third with 14.6 per cent. In Western Europe those results reversed, with second place IBM taking 18 per cent of the market, and Dell coming third with 14 per cent. Sun Microsystems lost ground in both markets, ranking bottom in western Europe with a five per cent share and trailing worldwide with 5.2 per cent. The report said enterprise Unix server sales in Western Europe fell by 36 per cent in the last twelve months, compared to sales in 2000.
