NEWS HP's Carly Fiorina and Compaq's Michael Capellas will this week pitch their companies' proposed $23bn merger in a presentation to the Packard Foundation. The Packard Foundation - one of the largest organisations in the US - holds a 10.4 per cent stake in HP and its vote on the merger could determine HP/Compaq's fate. The controversial deal is being strongly opposed by HP board member Walter Hewlett - son of HP co-founder Bill Hewlett - who previously vowed he would fight to stop the merger. Analysts expect the Packard Foundation to make its vote in early January 2002 or possibly later this month. This could be one of the most crucial presentations made in the history of Fiorina's and Capellas' careers.
