NEWS HP is taking orders for its first generation of super-thin 'bladed' servers. The HP server, code-named PowerBar, is a first for the server industry and will start shipping in January. It is designed around CompactPCI technology - used in the telecommunications sector as a way of squeezing many servers into as small a space as possible. The bladed servers comprise several types of 'blades' (circuit boards loaded with numerous microprocessors) for processing and storage - stacked within the one cabinet. According to US newswires, the first models will be shipped with Linux from Debian, Red Hat and SuSE. A blade system with 16 storage blades and 16 processing blades will cost around $45,000.
