It'll go 'a-waltzing Matilda' no more...

NEWS IBM plans to pull out of the Australian retail PC market early next year in a bid to refocus its efforts on more profitable B2B sales. The company holds a 14 per cent retail market share in Australia, but lags behind competitors Compaq, which controls 21 per cent of the market, and HP, which has a 16 per cent share. Toshiba, which holds a nine per cent share in the Australian PC market, also stands to gain from IBM's pull-out. Last month it announced it was withdrawing from the US desktop market due to increasing pressure from the likes of IBM. Fourteen major resellers will be affected, although consumers will still be able to buy computers from IBM's Australian website.
