NEWS Compaq has taken the wraps off a server that packs more computing power into a more compact frame than its competitors - and it consumes less energy. The ProLiant BL e-Class server is the first of the company's "blade" servers, which will be rolled out throughout the year. The more power-efficient chips used in the blade servers require fewer fans to cool them and can therefore be packed closer together. Compaq claims the new design allows six times as many servers than in a traditional set-up. The Proliant BL e-Class costs $1,799 per server, a rack can hold up to 280.
