NEWS EMC has unveiled the final piece of its cross platform software strategy announced last autumn in a blaze of publicity. The product, a new version of its ESN software, entitled ESN Manager, is part of EMC's AutoIS (Automated Information Storage) strategy announced last October, which detailed the giant's intention to sell storage software for other hardware makers. The announced product builds on its cross platform deal with Compaq as the ESN Manager allows Compaq Storage Work Arrays to discover, zone, and report on Compaq StorageWorks systems. Compaq has an enormous installed base of mid-range storage hardware, which could be regarded as beneficial to EMC and some analysts have even suggested its arch-rivals IBM and Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) could be at a serious disadvantage.
