NEWS Hewlett Packard has finally been given the go-ahead to buy Compaq by the European Commission. The Commission decided the $23.8bn deal would not inhibit European competition in the IT industry. The two US organisations are still waiting for approval from the US watchdog, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), although the FTC is not expected to oppose the deal. The merger now looks to have enough bureaucratic approval to be completed within five months, however, investor fears over the merger still need to be calmed. Carly Fiorina, who will head up the merged giant, must still defeat the vehement offspring of the Hewlett dynasty, who are still putting up strong opposition to the takeover.
