Microsoft performs storage u-turn

Exchange to support NAS after all...

NEWS It's emerged that Microsoft's Exchange server will support Network Attached Storage (NAS) after all. Last year silicon.com revealed that Microsoft had quietly withdrawn its NAS support on Exchange servers - a decision which outraged the storage industry. Exchange server is NT-based messaging software which can be accessed via web browsers or Outlook. It also has a built-in storage system. But now Microsoft has announced it is planning to support NAS enabled devices in its exchange server, according to Computerwire. Microsoft's turncoat decision means that Exchange can be configured with any NAS device, which redirects data onto an IP network and into a separate storage system. The company has been an ardent backer of storage area networks (SAN) or Direct Attached Storage (DAS) in the Exchange environment, but now says it will be unveiling its NAS strategy later on in the year.
