NEWS IBM is turning up the heat on rival Intel in the race to be chief pioneer in semiconductor development with today's release of a silicon transistor which promises to increase the performance of computer networks. The silicon transistor will increase efficiency by halving the power consumption of the transmission process and the new technology will enable signals to be sent three times faster within a network than is currently possible. The transistors will be shipping on chips in high-end networking equipment within the next 12 months. Intel and IBM have been battling for supremacy in semiconductor innovation with the release of several new developments each over the past 12 months.
