NEWS The new HP management team for UK and Ireland were introduced to an expectant public this morning to present their views on the recently merged company. The team represents a rich smattering of former Compaq employees as well as HP stalwarts. Heading up the team is former Compaq EMEA CFO Stephen Gill. He will now occupy the post of HP country general manager. HP's push into the services arena has attracted much criticism from analysts and industry observers alike. Carly Fiorina, CEO of HP, has often said she wants to compete with IBM Global Services for enterprise contracts - a goal many claim HP will be unable to achieve. But ex-Compaq staffer Jim Kent has been charged with the task of convincing UK businesses to go the HP way rather than with IBM or any other competitor. The newly merged company has already formed close ties with weighty corporate system integrators Accenture, Deloitte, KMPG and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Kent claimed he had a formidable task ahead of him but claimed the company has the edge to succeed. He said: "We don't aspire to be arrogant but we do need to put a bit of edge on our image. People often say we're too nice." Fellow ex-Compaqer Jude Meadows will take over as the general manager of the personal systems group, while HP stalwart Ian Whittaker will become general manager of the imaging and printing division and Andy Isherwood will head up the enterprise systems group.
