Microsoft announces Java flirtation

For limited period only...

NEWS Microsoft has said its first significant update of Windows XP will support Java, but only until 2004 when it will once again drop all support. Under pressure from Sun, Microsoft will bundle its Java Virtual Machine, which converts Java code so it's readable on any platform, in the next version of the operating system. Microsoft will use Java code which is five years old complaining its legal fight with Sun prevents it from using its more recent options. However, Microsoft is planning to drop all Windows support for Java in January 2004. Microsoft says it has taken this stance because Sun will not allow it to make any changes - even security updates - to Java. This, it says, would put customers at risk.
