Microsoft's next target: Sony

Gates hopes to usurp console giant

By Graham Hayday, 2 July 2002 08:10

NEWS Microsoft is working on a successor to its Xbox games console, slated for release in 2004. The new device, codenamed Freon, will offer gaming alongside advanced TV services. It will give viewers Tivo-like functions, enabling them to pause live footage and record programmes to disk, according to today's Wall Street Journal. Neither Sony nor Nintendo aim to release new products until 2005, which could give Microsoft an edge in the highly competitive market. The newspaper quotes a source familiar with the company's plans as saying: "The utmost goal is to ship something before Sony."
