Apple has warned consumers that some batteries in its MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops may need replacing.
The Mac maker has issued a support update on its website alerting users to battery "performance issues" and has posted a list of symptoms to enable MacBook users to determine if their machine is affected.
Apple has released a software update to help clear up the issues, which it says should be run on machines and spare batteries bought between February 2006 and April 2007. The fix can be downloaded here.
If, after running the software update, users find their battery shows warning signs of a fault - including the battery not being recognised by the MacBook and an 'x' appearing in the battery icon; the battery not charging when plugged into the mains; or the battery pack appearing "visibly deformed" - users should contact Apple for a replacement battery.
The problems do not present a safety risk, the company said, and replacement batteries will be offered even if the hardware is out of warranty.
News of Apple's problems marks the latest in a series of battery related sagas to dog laptop makers. Apple recalled 1.8 million batteries last year citing a risk of overheating due to Sony's battery cell technology.
The recall followed just a week after Dell's own call for 4.1 million batteries to be returned, also due to fears of overheating.
Hitachi, Lenovo, Sony and Toshiba also recalled devices in late 2006.
