Photos: Apple tablet: What's on our wish list

Rumours are rife - but what features would we want if a Mac tablet was to emerge?

Hardly a day goes by without some form of feverish speculation gripping the web about the existence of a tablet computing device from Apple.

With a seemingly blank canvas, there's plenty of room for industry watchers to stamp their own wants and needs on this unconfirmed piece of hardware. As long as everyone's speculating blindly, we took the initiative to work up a wish list of hardware and software for when, or if, the Apple tablet is ever released.

Fingerprint-resistant 10-inch screen
No matter how snazzy an Apple tablet might look, after a few hours with fingers sliding all over it, it will probably be taking a trip to smudge city. The fingerprint-resistant coating on the new iPhone 3GS seems to work well, so we hope it'll be used here as well.

A display measuring 10.1-inches diagonally seems to be the right balance of usability and portability. After all, it's the dominant screen size for netbooks, so plenty of laptop users are already familiar with it. Most of these small displays are 1,024 by 600, but higher-resolution 1,366 by 768 versions are also available. We could see Apple offering the higher resolution as an extra-cost option.

I'd like to see any Apple Tablet come with a built in card reader for all the usual digital camera storage cards, so that a photographer could download and examine (maybe even Photoshop) images onsite. Yes, you can do that with a MacBook and wires, but it's cludgy, and relatively heavy.
