3,400 tonnes of steel housing 2,000 servers

Microsoft recently opened its Chicago datacentre. In its first phase, the ground floor of the facility is designed to hold up to 56 containers, each filled with somewhere between 1,800 to 2,500 servers.

    Looks impressive.

    Unsure why they need to house servers inside containers - the article is a bit unclear on this.

    Is the pile of containers at Tilbury docks microsoft's UK Datacentre :-)

    I was wondering about the container situation too...

    Maybe its so they can move them quickly in the case of any naturak or other kind of disaster...

    Those upstairs "above ground" maybe less susceptible to these situations and may contain less important data and therefore would not need to be moved...

    Just a thought...

    What is the Carbon Footprint for this little lot? I do not get a warm feeling that our industry is getting its energy consumption (and bills!) down fast enough.
