Norwich Union is considering outsourcing some of its IT infrastructure which could affect up to 400 IT staff next year.
The insurer is in talks with EDS and IBM about outsourcing its IT infrastructure and data centre department.
Most of the roles are based in Norwich but staff at Bristol and York could also be affected.
It is looking at the possibility of transferring some staff to the service providers.
A spokesman for Norwich Union said: "We are at the very start of the process and it will continue through to next year before we make any decision."
The move is being considered as part of a general review of Norwich Union's operations that began in October last year.
As of last year Norwich Union employed about 5,000 staff in India.
One-third work in customer-facing roles in call centres, with the rest working in back-office functions such as IT.
