Radiation expert takes mobile operators to court

NEWS The mobile phone industry has been hit by a private prosecution from a radiation expert in Wales. He wants the industry to fix labels warning people of the potential danger of mobile phones. The first stage of the case was heard in Cwmbran in South Wales. Roger Coghill is prosecuting The Telephone Shop, also of Cwmbran, under the Consumer Protection Act. Coghill said: "We are not in this for the money, but we should all be using phones that are safe." He said he just wants the mobile phone industry to recognise the problem and start fitting warning labels. Coghill believes prolonged use can cause serious health damage. Coghill believes all mobile phones should a label with the text: "Warning: Prolonged continuous use of this handset, or non hands-free use whilst driving, may endanger your health and safety." Mr Coghill defines 'prolonged use' as 20 minutes of continuous use. The Telephone Shop, which pleaded not guilty, was not available for comment. The case has been adjourned until September.
