In brief: BT blocks sale of Cellnet shares

By Julian Goldsmith, 3 August 1998 12:55

NEWS BT has blocked an attempt by Securicor to sell its share in Cellnet. The company owns 40 per cent of the mobile operator, with BT owning the other 60 per cent. BT is said to want to buy Securicor's £3bn share in the company in due course. The telco is due to receive a £4bn cash payment for its 20 per cent stake in MCI. BT attempted to buy Securicor's share in 1995, but was blocked by the DTI. Commentators believe the present UK government would let the deal go ahead.
