NEWS A group of industry heavyweights is putting its support behind Mini PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect), a proposed standard for connecting small form factor products such as notebook PCs, docking stations and printers. The group includes 3Com, Compaq, IBM and Toshiba. Mini PCI takes the form of a daughter card with the same basic functionality of standard PCI expansion cards. It will allow a high-speed data path between a CPU and peripherals used for graphics, video, SCSI, LAN and other functions. Mini PCI emerged after 12 months of research and review. The ten companies involved claim the standard will act as an open architecture for manufacturers, reducing prices for end users.
