In brief: Intel ditches Slot 1 design for Celeron chips

NEWS Intel is to abandon the Slot 1 format for its family of Celeron processors, reverting instead to a pin-based design similar to that of its original Pentium chips. Experts say the move is a response to PC makers' complaints that the Slot 1 design is too expensive for building low-cost PCs. It is also being seen as an attempt to clearly distinguish between the Celeron and Pentium II (PII) lines, after tests showed narrow performance gaps between Celerons and PIIs running at the same clock speed. Intel said the move will be phased in over the next few years, with the first pin-based Celeron chips running at 300MHz and 333MHz, due for release early next year.
