Matsushita falls victim to spiralling chip crisis

NEWS Matsushita Electronics - famous for its Panasonic and Technics brand names - is shelving plans to open a new fabrication plant in Tonami, according to Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbun. As part of an effort to slash capital spending by 40 per cent over the next four years the company will also delay constructing another new plant, the newspaper reports. Matsushita is not alone in having problems selling memory chips. Siemens, Toshiba and Japan's largest chip manufacturer NEC have all made high profile cutbacks in recent weeks. Siemens was forced to axe over 1,000 jobs at its North Tyneside plant in the UK. Hyundai and Samsung - which some experts claim must take part of the blame for the chip glut - have also slashed production.
