NEWS Remote access firm Shiva bedded down in London's Waterloo station yesterday to promote teleworking. The company tucked a businessman under a duvet with a laptop to demonstrate to commuters that they could be home in bed instead of running down the concourse. Shiva's senior director of international marketing, Phil Crocker, said: "We're trying to promote teleworking to these commuters, who in their lifetimes will spend something like 3 years travelling to and from work." Crocker noted that underneath the stunt was a serious message for the UK government: "I wrote to John Prescott recently, because this is the week of the Labour Party Conference and there's been a lot of talk about the environment and about levying a charge for cars in central London. He should be offering incentives to work at home by giving people tax breaks on equipment and telecommunication charges. Then there's not just a big stick - but a carrot as well. "For example, in the US there are a number of states where they give companies significant tax incentives for the number of employees they have working at home," Crocker said. As yet, Prescott has not responded. Sitting on the bed, "teleworker" Nigel had spent eight hours noting commuter reaction to his set-up. The best comment was: "Shove over. I had to get up early today."
