KLM warns airports are still vulnerable to the millennium bug

NEWS KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has taken the unusual step of warning that air travel on 1 January 2000 could be unsafe because of the effects of the millennium bug. KLM's chief information officer, Max Rens, spoke to the Global Year 2000 Summit organised by the OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development), the World Bank, and the International Chamber of Commerce. Rens said most airlines will be compliant in time but warned that he doesn't trust governments to ensure that air traffic control, fuel and power supplies will be stable. He refused to name individual governments he is concerned about, but said the EU has been guilty of inaction. Rens also warned that if planes are kept on the ground because airports are not ready, the loss of revenue could leave many airlines facing bankruptcy within six months.
