NEWS Intel has run into trouble in the US over a new feature of its Pentium III chips, due for release today. Privacy campaigners are calling for a boycott of all Intel products because the new chips contain a unique ID number that they fear will allow people to be more effectively tracked across the Web. A spokesman for Intel denied privacy issues are at stake. "All it does is identify one component on your machine," he said, adding that Cyrix is doing the same thing while AMD is currently "evaluating" the idea. He admitted privacy groups in Europe were considering the issue. The spokesman said the feature can be switched off after downloading an application from Intel's Web site.
