NEWS Motorola and Cisco are set to announce the creation of a wireless network for transmitting faxes and email. Over the next four to five years, the companies will invest more than $1bn in creating a system that will use cellular telephone stations to transmit voice, data and video. IP has been chosen as a platform for transmission, as it is compatible with all forms of wireless devices. Under the terms of the alliance, four joint R&D centres will be opened two in the US and two abroad. Meanwhile, Microsoft and BT could also be joining the race to provide wireless access to the Internet. Neither company was available for comment, but Microsoft is expected to make an announcement later today in New Orleans at a wireless industry conference.
