NEWS Alcatel and 3Com have announced a deal to combine their telecommunications and handheld computing technologies. Alcatel will combine its GSM mobile phone systems with 3Com's Palm Pilot to create a two-part communications device. Through an open public forum, the two companies will also draw up a standard Application Programming Interface (API) dedicated to the convergence of handheld and mobile communications. The collaboration will also see the development of a software platform based on 3Com's Web Clipping server and Alcatel's Home Top software server products. The product will be used to offer customers a wide range of services such as voice and data messaging, personal telecoms management and Internet access via PCs, handheld computers, screen phones and mobile phones. The first products are expected to be available by the end of the year.
