NEWS France Telecom has announced plans to run trials of GPRS (general packet radio service) on its GSM network in Lille, Northern France. The tests will be conducted by Motorola's Network Solutions Sector over the summer. France Telecom hopes the technology will deliver continuous high-speed access to a range of data sources, including the Internet, via their mobile phones. GPRS enables networks to be used only when there is data to be sent, rather than in a continuous stream. Designed to speed up access to the Internet and email, it also allows a virtual permanent connection to data sources - allowing information to arrive rather than being sought. Last month Motorola signed a $50m deal with mobile operator CellNet to deliver GPRS capabilities to its UK network.
