NEWS Handheld computers will soon be able to pinpoint their own geographical position through software being developed the University of Kent. Jason Pascoe, who is leading the research, says they have developed a 'framework' that allows handhelds and portable Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to talk to each other. Pascoe has been developing the software for the last two years with an environmental research team. It has already been used to track wildlife movements and habits. Pascoe suggested the software could also allow handheld PCs to become an alarm clock, triggered by space, so that users can be reminded of certain things in certain locations - such as checking email when they return to the office. However. Andy Mulholland, technology markets director for Cap Gemini, was less convinced. "A lot is going on in the collision between the palmtop and mobile phones, but I can't see the applications for this kind of combination," he said.
