NEWS Motorola and Cisco have announced a joint venture to buy into the fixed wireless industry arm of Bosch Telecom. The new company will be called SpectraPoint Wireless. The parties refused to disclose the financial details of the purchase, in which Motorola will be the majority stakeholder. SpectraPoint will provide LMDS (Local Multipoint Distribution Services) technology that provides the 'last mile' connection to the customer from the local exchange. Fixed wireless systems deliver Internet capabilities at a much lower cost than wired systems and are thought to be ideal for developing world markets which do not have extensive communications infrastructures already in place. Motorola spokesman, Robert Edwards said the acquisition will allow the firm to penetrate the broadband wireless market earlier than expected, and that Bosch will give it the market presence it needs. "We are providing a one-stop shop for the customer with a real alternative solution to broadband infrastructures," he said.
