NEWS Xerox is to open a $325m printer manufacturing plant in Dundalk, Ireland. The move is set to create 1,000 jobs by 2003. The firm also announced plans to open a customer centre in Ireland, creating 300 jobs. Xerox vice president, Anne Mulcahy, said: "We looked at the UK and a Nordic country, but Ireland was the most attractive place to build. The government incentives were a factor, but more compelling was the skills set - particularly the language skills of the people there." When asked what lessons the UK government could learn from Xerox choosing Ireland ahead of the UK, she said: "I mentioned government incentives and skills set - I think the implications for the British government are clear." Mulcahy also singled out the role of the Irish Development Agency (IDA) in marketing the country to big corporations. She pointed out that the number of corporations choosing to open plants and offices in Ireland suggests that the IDA is doing a better job than other governments in promoting and marketing the country.
