Intel to sue Via over licensing agreement

NEWS Intel has sued Via Technologies, a chipset manufacturer, for allegedly breaking a licensing agreement, and illegally incorporating Intel-patented technology. Intel has claimed it asked Via to fall in line over recent months, but the Taiwan-based company refused, and so the chips giant brought a lawsuit shortly after terminating the two companies' licensing agreement The federal lawsuit - filed last Wednesday - has once again put the spotlight on Intel's business practices. The way the company deals with OEMs and other partners was the subject of a US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) investigation, which almost lead to a Microsoft-style trial. Although fast memory chip technology from Via will go up against Intel chipsets supporting Rambus, the Intel lawsuit doesn't say which products it objects to. Via was not available to comment. Another company that had a long-running legal dispute with Intel, S3, partners with Via for developing core logic and graphics chips.
