BT Cellnet pushes GPRS network application

By Joey Gardiner, 30 June 1999 17:31

NEWS BT Cellnet today launched a partnership with Olympic WorldLink to provide market trading information over its proposed GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) network. The service will supply the finance industry with up to date futures and options information direct to a palmtop computer. BT Cellnet already runs the service over its mobile GSM network - this deal will result in a similar service for the GPRS network. BT Cellnet is to invest £50m in GPRS technology and will launch the network in the second quarter of next year. GPRS technology only charges users for the time it takes to transmit data, not for the whole period of a call. A BT Cellnet spokesman today said this will mean "significant financial savings" for the user. Henry Harrison, senior consultant at Schema, said the deal represents a move forward for the commercial development of mobile technology.
