Vodafone takes to the sky

By John Oates, 9 August 1999 12:56

NEWS Vodafone has concluded a deal with Skyphone to allow its customers to make phone calls from mid-air. Vodafone customers will not use their own phones but will get a swipe card to use a Skyphone. The card charges all calls made through Skyphone terminals to the user's Vodafone standard account at $10 a minute. Passengers can also link up their laptops to the system. Seventeen major airlines use the Skyphone system, including British Airways. At present, users can only make outgoing calls, but the service will be extended to permit incoming calls from next year.
