NEWS Intel has announced that the Linux kernel for its next-generation 64-bit Merced chips will be available as open source code. Merced, Intel's first chip built around the 64-bit IA-64 architecture is scheduled for release in the middle of 2000, with the supporting Linux kernel due for release earlier in the year. Intel chairman, Andy Grove, announced at the LinuxWorld conference that Intel will also provide Merced-run servers to key Linux developers.
