NEWS Intel has announced the commercial name for its Merced chip - the Itanium. The chip will be the first built on its IA-64 design and is slated for release in the middle of next year. The chip giant has been developing the processor for over five years and claims to have prototypes constructed and under testing at present. The Itanium chip will process data in 64-bit chunks, superseding the firm's current 32-bit products. Intel says servers and workstations based on the chip will be available in the second half of next year. Intel rival, AMD, is also rumoured to be unveiling its 64-bit chip today. Reports state that the "Sledgehammer" chip will be non-compatible with Intel-based software and will be released in 2001.
