NEWS Phone.com, formerly Unwired Planet, has acquired Northern Ireland-based APiON's WAP business in an all stock transaction valued at about $239m. APiON supplies WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) software to ten GSM network operators, including Swisscom and Finland's Sonera. Use of the technology is set to take off over the next six months. The deal will see Phone.com inherit 110 staff, who will form the basis for the company's first site outside Silicon Valley, to be used as a European base. APiON's non-WAP services business is not included in the deal.
