NEWS Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Agilent - the former HP measurement and semiconductor business spun off earlier this year - have committed themselves to the mobile market. Speaking at Telecom 99 in Geneva, recently installed HP CEO Carly Fiorina said the company would partner with Nokia, and announced 23 other partners and customers who will work towards developing mobile services. A development centre has been set up in Finland, and the computing and imaging stalwart said a 'cyber bazaar' will act as a focal point for firms developing the next-generation of e-services over mobile phones. Fiorina, who in the past has worked for telecoms equipment giant Lucent Technologies, said: "These two separate worlds - telecoms and IT - are merging into one universe now." On the subject of HP prioritising telecoms, she added "Where we've [in the past] been broad and shallow, we'll be focused and deep." According to Cambridge-based consultancy Analysys, the global mobile data market will be worth $80bn by 2010, and Fiorina said dynamically brokering mobile e-services will be "the big bang" for the company. Outgoing chairman Lew Platt promised that HP will make an increased commitment to communications markets, which he described as the company's most important market.
